Travel tips for Italy

Entry rules, safety notes and the small local details worth knowing for this particular trip.

Immigration & entry

Schengen rules apply

  • Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond Oct 18 and issued within the last 10 years.
  • UK, US, CA and AU passport holders: no visa for stays under 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • Keep the hotel booking confirmation and return flight handy — border police occasionally ask.
  • EES biometric registration on first entry; allow an extra 30 minutes at Naples passport control.

Safety

Calm coast, careful cities

  • Positano and Ravello are very safe; usual pickpocket caution around Naples station and port.
  • Coastal road (SS163) is narrow — prefer the arranged driver over self-drive at night.
  • Path of the Gods: start before 09:00, carry 2L water, and turn back if the ridge is fogged in.
  • Sea conditions change fast — check the marina flag before swimming off the rocks.

Health

Cover and pharmacies

  • EHIC/GHIC covers public care for EU/UK travelers; travel insurance still recommended.
  • Emergency number is 112. Nearest hospital: Ospedale Costa d'Amalfi, Castiglione (25 min).
  • Farmacia Positano on Via dei Mulini keeps evening hours and speaks English.
  • No vaccinations required. Tap water is safe throughout the coast.

Money & connectivity

Euros, cards, and coverage

  • Euro (€). Cards accepted almost everywhere; keep €50 cash for taxis and beach clubs.
  • Service is usually included — round up rather than tipping 15–20%.
  • EU roaming is free for EU/UK plans; otherwise an eSIM is cheaper than day passes.
  • Signal drops on the Path of the Gods — download offline maps before hiking.

Local etiquette

Small things that matter

  • Cover shoulders and knees inside churches, including Santa Maria Assunta.
  • Dinner rarely starts before 20:00; lunch service ends around 15:00.
  • Greet with 'buongiorno' when entering a shop — leaving silently reads as rude.
  • Swimwear stays at the beach; town streets expect a cover-up.
